This beautiful mosaic, which depicts the arrival of the body of Saint Mark in Venice, is above one of the doors of the Basilica San Marco and depicts the basilica itself. The mosaic was done as part of the remodelling of the church after the Fourth Crusade as the four bronze horses, brought back to Venice as part of the loot from that episode, can be seen in place.
I’ve always liked this picture since it’s almost like a picture within a picture. The location of the mosaic, can be seen in the mosaic itself. It’s above the door to the left of the central door. I took a photo of it in my early twenties, which I printed and framed and has been on my wall ever since.
